A Boo-tiful hair accessory 👻

If you are looking for a fun accessory to wear in October (or any day really!), this ghost hair clip is the one to make! It’s a whimsical little project that makes a fun Halloween accessory and a great conversation starter!

Length of the ghost: 3 cm

Total length: 7.5 cm

You can easily customize the height of your ghost by shortening the wire. You can also remove the wire completely and attach the ghost directly to the hair clip.

Material

• Super fine cotton yarn in white and black
• 2.5 mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• 5 mm safety eyes
• Hair clip
• Wire
• Large bead or button (to help secure the wire)
• Black Felt
• Hot glue gun
• Stuffing

Stitched Used | Abbreviations

• MR: Magic Ring
• Sl knot: slip knot
• Sl st: slip stitch
• sc: single crochet
• inc: increase – 2 sc in 1 st
• dec: decrease – 1 sc in 2 st
• Bo: Bobble stitch – Yarn over and work 5 incomplete double crochets into the same stitch, leaving the final loop of each dc on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, then push the bobble toward the front of your work.
• FLO: Front Loops Only
• BLO: Back Loops Only
• * *: repeat the sequence
• [ ] – done in the same stitch

Notes

• The ghost is worked in continuous rounds.
• The ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
• The number in parentheses ( ) at the end of each round indicates the total stitch count.

Using the white yarn

Round 1: MR, 6 sc in MR (6)

Round 2: *inc* all around (12)

Round 3: *sc, inc* all around (18)

Round 4: *2 sc, inc* all around (24)

Round 5-8: *sc* all around (24)

Round 9: *6 sc, Bo, 10 sc, Bo, 6 sc (24)

Round 10-11: *sc* all around (24)

Round 12, FLO: *[sc, hdc, sc] in one st, sl st into the next st* all around (48; a total of 12 curves)

Add the eyes between Round 7 and 8, 4 stitches apart. Return to the unworked back loops of Round 12 and attach a new piece of white yarn

Add stuffing

Round 14: *dec* all around (8)

Cut the yarn and leave a long tail. This tail will be used to close the opening and cover the wire that holds the ghost upright.

Before closing the opening completely, insert the wire through the center of the ghost. Secure the end inside the ghost by gluing a large bead or button to the top of the wire. Once you’re happy with the wire placement and stuffing, close the opening around the wire. Using your needle, weave through the front loop of each remaining stitch, then pull tight to close the opening.

Using the long white yarn tail, wrap it tightly around the exposed wire to completely cover it. Continue wrapping until you reach your desired ghost height, then secure the yarn with glue.

Leave plenty of uncovered wire below the wrapped section. You’ll use this extra wire to securely attach the ghost to the hair clip.

Clip Base

Using the black yarn

Round 1: sl knot, ch 10, sc in the 2nd ch away from the hook, 7 sc, [3 sc], working along the opposite side of the chains, 7 sc, [2 sc], sl st to close the round (20)

Round 2: ch 1, inc, 7 sc, 3 inc, 7 sc, 2 inc, sl st to close the round (26)

Round 3: ch 1, sc, inc, 7 sc, *sc, inc* x 3, 7 sc, *sc, inc* x 2 (32)

Cut the yarn and finish off.

Assembly

Cut a piece of felt that matches the size of the hair clip base that you crocheted. Then make sure to cut slits on each slide of the felt strip to secure the clip to the felt. Glue the felt onto the hair clip.

Insert the wire attached to the ghost through the 5th stitch of the crocheted clip base.

Adjust the wire until you’re happy with the distance between the ghost and the clip. Bend the wire at a 90-degree angle against the underside of the crochet base. Add glue where the wire bends to secure it in place. Continue bending the remaining wire across the underside of the crochet base for extra stability, adding glue as needed.

Finally, glue the crocheted base onto the felt-covered hair clip, sandwiching the wire securely between the layers.
